A missed opportunity for ePayments @ Godavari Pushkaralu

The last few days a sea of humanity has descended on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana along the Godavari Ghats.

The sea of humanity has only one aim: - Dip in the Holy Godavari River on the occasion of Godavari Pushkaralu.

The magnitude of the event can be witnessed at 275 ghats spread across the banks of River Godavari in two of India’s youngest states i.e Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

One Event-275  Godavari Ghats- Four Crore Visitors
@ Telangana - Basar,Dharmapuri, Koti Lingala, Kaleshwaram, Bhadrachalam
@ Andhra Pradesh - Rajahmundry, Kovvur, Narasapuram, Antervedi

As per urban lore, a dip in River Godavari during the Pushkaram time relieves from all sins. At the same time rituals to departed souls are also performed.

What is Pushkara ?
  • Pushkaram or Pushkaralu (in Telugu), Pushkara or Pushkar is an Indian festival dedicated to worshipping of rivers.
  • Pushkara or Pushkar is a Sanskrit word derived from the element of Push (Pushti) meaning nourishment and Kara means one who does it.
  • Pushkara is the energy that nourishes.
This year as the sacred places are located in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, both the State Government have made elaborate arrangements to attract the maximum number of visitors to the sacred places situated in their respective states.

Both States are determined to turn this as a major branding opportunity. Visitors from India and abroad are both being invited to have a ‘life time’, experience.
     Activities ar
e being planned for the next one year, to maintain the tempo and increase the tourist quotient of the associated towns along River Godavari.

Pushkaram continues till the time Jupiter progresses to the next Zodiac sign, but the festivities will go on only for 12 days in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The first 12 days (14th July 2015 to 25th July 2015) of Pushkaram is called ‘Aadi Pushkaram’ and last 12 days is called ‘Anthya Pushkaram’.

Unfortunately, no financial institution or other institutions have not thought of ‘ePayments’, as a branding tool.

 The ‘Cash Economy’ still prevails.

A large number of Telugu speaking populace from all over the world have will be descending on the banks of River Godavari for a holy dip during Godavari Pushkaralu 2015.

The initial preparations for this mass congregation begun a year ago. The formation of the new Andhra Pradesh sped the preparation work. As per the initial estimates around 3 crores plus public will take the holy dip in the waters of Godavari, during this 12 days period.

“Pushkaralu”- the word from Telugu origin means an Indian festival dedicated to worshipping of rivers. It is celebrated across the shrine banks of the 12 most hallowed rivers in the country. These celebrations include ancestral worship, spiritual ventilate and cultural programmes

The Much awaited Godavari Pushkaralu 2015  starts on July 14th 2015. The best Place to visit at Godavari Pushkarams is Dharmapuri, Karimnagar, Kaleshwaram, Basar and Bhadrachalam in Telangana state and Narasapuram, Kovvur and Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.

The Temple Town of Bhadrachalam is expected to witness a congregation of over a crore devotees during the 12-day event, which is slated to commence on July 14, 2015. The Towns of Rajahmundry and Kovvur are expected to witness a congregation of 2 to 3.5 crore people.

The renowned Sri Sitaramachandra Swamy temple in Bhadrachalam will be kept open for nearly 20 hours a day during the 12-day Godavari Pushkaralu scheduled to begin at 6.26 a.m. on July 14.

All roads lead to Rajahmundry, the 1,000-year-old historical town as well as modern town in Andhra Pradesh, as Godavari pushkaram approaches fast.

The Andhra Pradesh Government is spending more than Rs. 1,000 crores over the pushkaram arrangements on renovating the temples dotted all over East Godavari and West Godavari districts and in making the bathing ghats ready for the grand event.

The South Central Railway (Hyderabad) and the East Coast Railway (Bhubabneswar) are running several special trains during the 12-day period from Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam to Rajahmundry.

The AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is gearing up to ply buses from all over AP and Telangana for the event.

In Nizambad district, talks are on with Maharashtra for release of water. The State government is negotiating with the Government of Maharashtra to release water from its irrigation projects for the bathing ghats at Kandakurthi and around it during the Godavari Pushkaralu beginning July 14 with monsoon playing truant causing low level of water in the river.

The Demand-Supply theory will be visible in all the towns associated with Godavari Pushkaralu 2015. Devotees will have to pay extra to travel by road, rail or air to reach Rajahmundry, Kovvur and other towns in Godavari districts to take part in the ensuing Godavari Pushkaralu as APSRTC, Railways and private airlines will be hiking fares.

There was no focus on Safe ePayments techniques at the preparatory meetings. Cash will be the main driver. There will be sprinkling of eWallets/Mobile Wallets. However, Digital transactions are not expected to dominate GP 2015.

The average time spent by majority of the devotees would be 6-12 hours as majority of devotees would not stay back in the Religious towns, but complete their rituals and head back to their  towns.

There is no difference between Retail and Corporate customers. Union Bank of India is offering this facility for both Retail and Corporate customers.
