July 2016: Holidays for unique festivals

Festival: Jumati-ul-Vida. 01-Jul-16. Friday

Brief Description: Jamat-ul-Vida is a special and holy festival falls every year a day before the end of Ramzan month. At this day Muslim people perform special prayer (in addition to their regular Friday prayers) by reciting their Holy Quran for whole day.

State: Jammu & Kashmir

Festival: Guru Hargovind Ji's Birthday. 05-Jul-16. Tuesday

Brief Description: Guru Hargobind Sahib also Saccha Padshah (born 5 July 1595–died 19 March 1644. According to another tradition, he was born on 5th of July 1595. He was the sixth of the of the Ten Sikh Gurus and became Guru on 25 May 1606 following in the footsteps of his father Guru Arjan Dev ( Fifth guru of sikh ). He was not, perhaps, more than eleven at his father's execution. Before ascension, he nominated Guru Har Rai, his grandson as the next Guru of the Sikhs.

Festival: Kharchi Puja. 12-Jul-16. Tuesday

    'Kharchi’ or ‘Khmarchi’ festival is typical of Tripura. It is a celebration for worship of the tutelary deity of the royal family of Tripura. Once prevalent only in the royal family, the worship of the Fourteen Gods has now turned into a festival of the general public irrespective of caste or creed of Tripura's inhabitants. In Rajmala - the annals of the kings of Tripura - there are many unreal and imaginary stories about the origin of the Fourteen Gods, though there is no historical basis for these stories.

Event :  Martyr's Day. 13-Jul-16. Wednesday

Brief Description: Martyrs' Day is observed in Kashmir in remembrance of the people killed on 13 July 1931 by the state forces. On the day Kashmiris were agitating outside the jail premises, at Srinagar, where Abdul Qadeer was tried on the charge of terrorism and inciting public against the Maharaja of Kashmir.

State: Jammu & Kashmir

Festival:  Ker Puja. 26-Jul-16. Tuesday

Brief Description: Ker Puja is held after a fortnight of Kharchi Puja and is a traditional tribal festival. The deity of Vastu Devata is Ker meaning boundary or a particular area. People believe that the former rulers in the past used to perform this Puja for the general welfare and well being of the people of the state.

June 2016: Holidays for unique festivals

Festival: Maharana Pratap Jayanti  - 07/Jun/16 - Tuesday

Brief Description: Maharana Pratap (1568-1597 C.E.) was a Hindu Rajput King of Mewar in Rajasthan, India. Maharana Pratap belonged to the Sisodiya clan of Rajputs. He is revered and worshipped by many royal families in Rajasthan for his bravery and courage.

Maharana Pratap is best known for Battle of Haldighati against Mughal emperor Akbar to defend his kingdom.

Celebrations are mainly limited to the regions of Rajasthan. The famous Haldighati fair of Mewar is celebrated in the Rajasthan State.

State: Himachal Pradesh

Event : Martyrdom Day of Sri Guru Arjun Dev Ji – 08/Jun/16 - Wednesday

Brief Description: On 16 June 1606, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir ordered that Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru be tortured and sentenced to death after the Guru had refused to stop preaching his message of God as started by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Guru was made to sit on a burning hot sheet while boiling hot sand was poured over his body. After enduring five days of unrelenting torture, Guru Arjan Dev Ji was taken for a bath in the river. As thousands watched he entered the river, never to be seen again.

Accordingly, on the 16 of June of every year since 1606, the Sikhs commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru and the first Sikh Martyr.

State: Punjab

Festival: Raja Sankranti – 15/Jun/16 - Wednesday

Brief Description: Raja Sankranti (Swing festival) or "Mithuna Sankranti" is the first day of the month of 'Asara' from, which the season of rains starts. It inaugurates and welcomes the agricultural year all over Orissa, which marks, through biological symbolism, the moistening of the summer parched soil with the first showers of the monsoon, thus making it ready for productivity.

Welcoming the Monsoon: - To celebrate the advent of monsoon, the joyous festival is arranged for three days by the villagers. Though celebrated all over the state it is more enthusiastically observed in the districts of Cuttack, Puri and Balasore. The first day is called "Pahili Raja" (Prior Raja), second is "Raja" (Proper Raja) and third is "Basi Raja" (Past Raja).

Festival: Shri Basava Jayanti

Brief Description: Basavanna Jayanti, or Basava Jayanti, marks the birth anniversary of the 12th Century thinker, social reformer, saint and religious teacher, Basaveshwara. In 2016, the date of Basava Jayanti is May 9. Basvanna is considered to be the founder of Lingayatism or Lingayat Sect or Veerashaivism. He was responsible for sweeping social changes in Karnataka and surrounding regions around 900 years ago.

Chef Vikas Khanna’s Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum @ WGHSA-Manipal

          Imagine seeing a large building shaped like a large ladle in the distance. Awe-struck you are attracted to it and walk into it. The building houses rows and rows of traditional Indian household kitchen paraphernalia.

          You keep on moving, exploring, taking selfies, updating  your social media status and by the end of couple of hours, your taste senses fire up.

The ground has been broken for India’s first Culinary Museum at Manipal. In another couple of years, the Culinary Museum in Manipal will attract visitors in large numbers.

          The Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum is the brain-child of Michelin starred Chef Vikas Khanna.  Chef Vikas Khanna has spent his formative years at Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal University. He is an alumnus of  WGHSA and hence the choice to locate the Cm at WGSHA, Manipal.

Rajesh Bhardwaj, CEO & Founder of Junoon Restaurant, New York and Dubai also accompanied Chef Vikas Khanna at the ground breaking ceremony.

Other luminaries who graced the occasion were Chancellor Manipal University Dr Ramdas M Pai, Prof. Parvadhavardhini Gopalakrishnan, Principal, WGSHA  and Vice Principal Chef K. Thirugnanasambantham .

The budget of the Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum is $4 million dollars museum, with focus on India's unique culinary heritage.

The museum will display traditional household kitchen paraphernalia. Chancellor Manipal University Dr Ramdas M Pai will grace the occasion. "We are glad that Chef Vikas Khanna has thought of making this museum at WGSHA," said Prof. Parvadhavardhini Gopalakrishnan, Principal, WGSHA.

She added, "We are very proud of him and are happy that in spite of his commitments across the globe, he still manages to keep in touch with his alma mater and has gone to a great extent to collect hundreds of traditional kitchen utensils from across the world, which would go a long way towards understanding of the forgotten utility of these by the new generation of chefs who do not use these anymore".

Vice Principal Chef K. Thirugnanasambantham, who is coordinating the setting up of the museum said: I'm very excited to find so many traditional and artistic kitchen appliances and utensils are being brought together, thanks to this endeavour by Chef Vikas Khanna.

The design of the building is based on a ladle. A futuristic building shaped like a giant ladle will rise in Manipal in few years from now.

The seeds of the Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum were sown in the last 15 years, when  the Amritsar-born chef  has been collecting pots and pans besides other utensils from India for the upcoming one-of-its-kind’ museum in Manipal, Karnataka.

“It is a very big project I want to preserve all of our country’s rich culinary history. There is no other place in the world, believe me, which has such diversity. And what better way to do it than with food,” says Khanna on his visit here recently.

The MasterChef India judge and celebrity face of Junoon, a modern Indian flagship restaurant in New York with a branch in Dubai, has been with anthropological zeal scouring for old kitchen utensils during his visits to India. “You can find in my treasure trove vessels from Kashmir, Jammu, Pune, Hyderabad, Kochi, the list go on. For the past 15 years whenever I visited India I have been carrying a piece of it back in the form of kitchen utensils. Be it ladles, colourful rolling pins for making chappatis, measuring cups or a huge variety of tea strainers from different regions of the country,” says Khanna.

Being a graduate from the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal University, the chef wanted to repay his alma mater and tied up with it for the USD 4 million ‘Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum’.

For now, the treasures collected by Khanna, which include plates from Goa made by the Portuguese while they were here, an over 100-year-old ladle with an iconic design used to serve devotees in a temple, an yesteryear seed sprinkler, an ancient samovar (tea pot) and others have been stored in a godown and will go into the museum, which is expected to be open by 2020.

“The idea is to have a living museum, to be continuously updating its collection. For some time, we displayed utensils in my New York restaurant and we had patrons who donated their generations-old vessels to add to the collection,” says Khanna.

The idea of the Culinary Arts and Culinary Museum germinated when When Michelin Star Chef of Junoon New York Vikas Khanna visited a museum in US where they talked about how the electric bulb was invented. This visit had a profound impact he and he was reminded of the kitchen utensils, especially the huge ones used to serve pilgrims at temples. For Khanna, the invention of the kitchen utensils - the shape, metal, the way it was carved - was no less valuable than the invention of the light bulb.

          Speaking to reporters after the 'bhumi puja' ceremony, Vikas said, "What has been created before - dishes of every shape, every utensil, every measuring stone, everything has such a long history, has led us to this point. We are connected to so many kitchen homes, temples rituals which make our plate complete. We are incomplete without that past. A culinary museum of this kind celebrates every region - Calcutta, North East, Odisha, Pondicherry, Goa, Kashmir, Gujarat, Rajasthan and the South," he said.
Every utensil at the museum has a story. For instance, the museum will have the first thal (plate) in which Mysore pak was made. A few people have preserved this thal and willingly gave it to Vikas. Among other prominent utensils are old spoons from Udupi that were procured from Dubai. "We have some buckets or a variety of tea strainers in different shapes. The museum will speak for itself. They are the last remains of the dynasty as people do not manufacture them anymore," he observed.

Apart from having India’s unique culinary heritage, the museum worth INR 267.74 million, will also display traditional household kitchen paraphernalia.

State Bank of India wants you to spend less time in its branches

          Though the share of digital banking transactions over physical banking transactions is on the increase, the walk-in customers at bank branches are not decreasing.

          To enhance customer satisfaction and reduce staff fatigue, banks are rolling out innovative technology based tools.

          In this regard, State Bank of India has launched ‘State Bank of India NO Queue’ Mobile App.

          This APP is available on both from Google Play store and Apple App store.

          The APP was launched by Smt.Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman, SBI in Mumbai.

          The aim of the APP is simple – Reduce waiting time for customers in its branches.  

           The APP is a mobile based virtual queuing application for customers to book an instant queue ticket for selected services at select branches.

Based on the services selected by the customers, the list of branches with addresses providing those services within a configured radius of 15 Kms will be populated in the application.

Customers can view the details such as expected waiting time at the select Branch, number of customers waiting and distance to the Branch from the point of booking.

Once the customer reaches the Branch, he has to activate his Q-ticket and he will be serviced immediately, thus avoiding waiting time at the Branch.

The APP is designed to save customers’ valuable time, avoid queue for Banking services and aims to provide the customers with a better customer service experience.
