FASTag Balance – Just give a Missed Call and get Balance SMS

Just before COVID19, the usage of FASTag started picking up, with more and more Vehicle users appreciating the FASTag benefits.

Before lockdown on FASTag enabled roadway, 70% of the toll collections were on FASTag. Yet, FASTag users faced a very unique problem i.e the ‘Available Balance’, on their FASTag.

This inconvenience led to users complaining at various levels about the embarrassment at the Toll Gates about ‘insufficient balance’, messages.

To address this gap, NPCI vide Cir.Dt. Nov28th 2019 advised NETC Member Banks to provide FASTag Balance through SMS via a Missed Call Service.

Providing account balance through SMS via a Missed Called Service is very common in Banking industry. The challenge here is that the FASTag Account Balance only should GO, nothing more, nothing less.

Different NETC Banks have different mechanisms of tagging the FASTag.
        Eg:

Punjab National Bank (PNB) tags it’s FASTag to a prepaid or savings account.

Canara Bank tags it’s FASTag to ‘CANARA FASTag account’, which is prepaid account.

As NETC Member Banks need time to develop this service, NPCI in the same circular advised Banks to send a Daily SMS to their respective Low Balance FASTag account holders.

The SMS should be in the standard SMS format shared by NPCI/

As I am not holding any FASTag, I am not sure if NETC Member Banks are sending SMSs for Low Account Balance in FASTag accounts.
        Feedback welcome
