Dr.M.H.Marigowda,
Father of Horticulture in Karnataka 1916-1993. Service to the department from
1951-1974 (23Years)
Dr.
M. H. Marigowda, a visionary who promoted horticulture and heralded its
revolution in Karnataka in a colossal way, dedicated his entire life to the
cause of Horticulture. He rendered yeoman’s service to the development of
horticulture in Karnataka and developed the state into a model state in the
field of horticulture in the entire country. He grew as a true friend of
farmers and lived as one.
In
Karnataka’s history, no match is found to the enormity of the achievements of
Dr. M. H. Marigowda in the field of horticulture. He chose the field of
horticulture with a desire to work for the betterment of the farmer, who is the
backbone of our nation. A person of novel thinking and planning, he reaped gold
from the barren lands.
When
Dr. M. H. Marigowda, joined office in 1951, the state had only two
horticultural farms. At the time of his retirement in 1974 (after 23 years of
his service at the Department), the number of horticulture farms and nurseries
had risen to 394 and the area of horticulture farms from around 100 acres to
around 18,000 acres. To his credit, he also expanded the area of Lalbagh from
140 acres to 240 acres.
SPECIAL ATTRACTION OF THE SHOW:
Tribute to Dr.
M. H. Marigowda, father of Horticulture in Karnataka:
Dr.

entrance of the Glasshouse and floral tributes will be paid. Miniature replicas
of the Department of Horticulture, HOPCOMS and Nurserymen’s Cooperative
Society, the organizations, which he built and nurtured, and Mysore
Horticultural Society, a society that was actively promoted by him, and floral
arrangements, will be exhibited in a distinct way around the statue.
An

Floral Replica of the Parliament House, New Delhi:
Originally
called the House of Parliament, it was designed by the British architect Edwin
Lutyens and Herbert Baker in 1912-1913 and construction began in 1921. The
opening ceremony of the Parliament House, then called the Central Legislative
Assembly, was performed on 18 January 1927 by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of
India. The third session of Central Legislative Assembly was held in this house
on 19 January 1927. The Central Hall of the Parliament is designed to be
circular in shape. The dome is 98 ft. (29.87 metres) in diameter and is
believed that it is one of the most magnificent domes in the world. The Central
Hall is a place of historical importance in India for two reasons: The transfer
of colonial power to the Provisional Government under Nehru in 1947 and the
framing of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly took place in this very
hall. The highlight of the 2016 August Flower Show, which also celebrates the
birth centenary of Dr. M. H. Marigowda, is the floral creation of the
magnificent Parliament House using more than 4 lakh roses. 52 expert florists
and 32 skilled laborers have worked for 9 days to create this floral replica.
