IKEA Hyderabad invites you to savour Swedesi Tadka

We Indians deploy Tadka in our daily dishes to release the flavour of spices into respective dishes. Majority of Indians have wonderful memories of Tadka when the dishes are being prepared.

The English equivalent of Tadka is ‘Tempering’. In layman terms, ‘Tadka’, is the technique in which whole or ground spices are briefly roasted in oil or ghee (clarified butter) in order to release their essential oils, thus making their flavor more aromatic.

The ‘Tadka’, technique is popular across India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Tadka is also called chounk, tarka, bagar, and other names in various languages. The spices used in Tadka also change from dish to dish, place to place, house to house.

The Tadka is unique to each person preparing the dish, and it is difficult to replicate it. A minute change of the species added to Tadka is enough to bring in new flavours to the dish.

After roasting, the tadka is added to the dish, oil and all. It is a common addition to dal  and sambar , though the tadka technique can be used in major Indian dishes.

Adding tadka to a dish is at either at the beginning of a dish or as a finishing touch.

On 25th March 2019, IKEA Hyderabad is organising a two hour workshop on Swedesi Tadka techniques.
