         After a considerable period of anticipation, LIC has now officially integrated BBPS (Bharat Bill Payment System) into its services as a Premium Collection Channel. While several other insurance companies had already adopted BBPS quite some time ago, LIC's inclusion in the BBPS ecosystem had been long-awaited by many.

The much-awaited moment has finally arrived, as BHIM, a prominent digital payments platform, has recently announced that LIC Premium payments can now be conveniently made through its online portal. This development marks a significant milestone for LIC and its customers.

Prior to LIC's participation, it seemed as though there was a missing piece in the puzzle of insurance companies within the BBPS framework.

With LIC now on board, the circle is complete, offering customers a more comprehensive and unified platform for managing their insurance premium payments.

This exciting development not only streamlines the payment process but also enhances the accessibility and convenience for LIC policyholders, making it easier than ever to manage their premium payments.

Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is India's integrated bill payment ecosystem, designed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and driven by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

It offers customers an accessible and interoperable bill payment service through a network of registered member agents, known as Agent Institutions (AI). BBPS supports various payment modes and ensures instant payment confirmation.

 

NPCI, serving as the Bharat Bill Payment Central Unit (BBPCU), establishes business standards and rules while overseeing technical and operational requirements for all participants. Additionally, NPCI manages clearing and settlement activities related to BBPS transactions.

BBPS seamlessly integrates with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), facilitating easy, secure, and instant payments via UPI-enabled smartphones.

This RBI-conceptualized system simplifies bill payments, offering an "Anytime Anywhere" service with certainty, reliability, and safety. It covers a wide range of bill categories, including electricity, telecom, DTH, gas, water bills, and more, with the potential to expand to include insurance premiums, mutual funds, school fees, credit card payments, local taxes, and other invoices. Customer complaints are efficiently addressed within the BBPS framework.

Customers can initiate BBPS transactions through various channels, such as the internet, internet banking, mobile apps, point-of-sale terminals, mobile wallets, kiosks, ATMs, bank branches, agents, and business correspondents. Payment options include credit, debit, and prepaid cards, NEFT internet banking, UPI, wallets, Aadhaar-based payments, and cash.

BBPS, the Bharat Bill Payment System, offers several key features:

Integration: It serves as an integrated platform connecting banks, non-banks, billers, payment service providers, and retail bill outlets in the bill aggregation business.

Interoperable and Accessible: BBPS ensures interoperability and accessibility, enabling seamless bill payments through various channels, both digital and physical.

Cost-Effective: It promotes cost-effectiveness across the entire ecosystem by implementing a flat fee charge system, as opposed to the current ad valorem model.

Simplified Connectivity: Bill Payment Operating Units (BBPOUs) only need to connect to the BBPCU to access all billers, while utility companies need to connect with a maximum of two BBPOUs to serve all customers.

Standardization: BBPS establishes standardized processes for handling customer grievances, whether the transactions are on the same network (ON-US) or different networks (OFF-US).

Dispute Management: It facilitates BBPOUs in raising and resolving disputes related to transactions processed through the BBPS system.

Clearing & Settlement: Multiple clearing and guaranteed settlement processes are in place between different parties, ensuring standardized Turnaround Time (TAT).

Brand Connection: BBPS provides a single, trusted brand connection and assurance to customers, enhancing trust and reliability in the bill payment process.
