On Friday (05/08/2022), Karnataka chief
minister Basavaraj Bommai inaugurated the Lalbagh Botanical Garden's
Independence Day flower show. The flower show is back in town after a two-year
break due to the Covid-19 outbreak. It has been themed after father-son duo
Kannada film stars Dr Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar.
After four flower show being cancelled in a
row, the 212th annual LalBagh flower show will be held between August 5 and 15.
The show, which is themed on Kannada
matinee idol Dr Rajkumar and his son Puneeth Rajkumar is being held at the cost
of Rs 2.5 crore.
Karnataka’s Horticulture Minister Muniratna
Naidu told reporters on Wednesday (03/08/2022), “The show will be held from
August 5 to August 15 and the ticket rates are priced between Rs 70 on weekdays
and Rs 75 on weekends.
The flower show gets organised twice every
year, for Republic Day and Independence Day by the Horticulture Department
along with Mysore Horticulture Society.
The botanical garden is enriched with
numerous native and exotic flora of wide ranging diversity, by way of
introduction, acclimatization and multiplication from various parts of the
world since its inception in 1760.
Today, 2150 species of plants belonging to
673 genera and 140 families can be seen in Lalbagh. The collection of such
diverse types of plant wealth has made Lalbagh, a veritable treasure house of
plants.
The three mango trees in the garden said to
have been existent for the last 250 years, perhaps since the time of Hyder Ali
and Tipu Sultan are located near the fernery. These trees have withstood the
vagaries of nature and still bear fruits.
