Indian Railways booster to UPI



          Now, it’s the turn of Indian Railways to boost UPI volumes.

Passengers can book rail tickets through two channels i.e Offline and Online

PRS is the offline channel.

NGeT is the online channel.

Next Generation E-ticketing system (NGeT) provides the web based front-end application to handle all the Internet ticket bookings for IRCTC.

Passenger Reservation System (PRS) provides reserved accommodation for passengers, in various classes of travel, Tatkal tickets, and special trains; including dynamic pricing.

          The Indian Railway Board, vide Commercial Circular No 49 of 2018, dt. 10/09/2018 extended the facility of 5% discount till March 2019, for train tickets purchased at PRS counters through UPI channel.

          Surprised!!

          Yes, Railways offer 5% discount for tickets booked physically at its ticket issuing counters. These ticket issuing counters are spread all over India and still attract sizeable travellers.

          There are 3200+ counters all across India through which Railway tickets can be booked.

Passenger Reservation System Statistics: -  

During the month of June 2018, total of 5.85 crore passengers were booked from 10,292 PRS Terminals at 3,437 locations  resulting in total earnings of INR3573.36 crore.

In the corresponding period of June 2017, total of 5.82 crore passengers were booked from 10,102 PRS Terminals at 3,430 locations and IRCTC website resulting in total earnings of INR3568.50 crore.

Indian Railways is a commonly used mode of public transportation in the country. During 2016-17, it carried 8,116 million passengers as against 8,107 million in 2015-16.

Passenger Revenue :

Passenger earnings in 2016-17 were INR46,280.46 crore. This wasINR1,997.20crore (4.51 %) higher than the earnings in 2015-16. Suburban traffic contributed 5.81 % to the total earnings.

The remaining 94.19 % came from non-suburban passengers. Earnings from Second and Sleeper Class Mail/Express passengers comprised 50.20 % of the total passenger earnings.

Railways is leading Government  of India’s cashless effort with nearly three-fourth of its reserved ticket earnings now coming from cashless sources.
