The
postal department has released a special cover to commemorate the ongoing Athi
Varadar festival in Kanchipuram. A limited-edition of 1000 covers priced at Rs50/-
were released by Tamil Nadu Postal circle.
Governor
Banwarilal Purohit had the honour of releasing the special cover on “Athi
Varadar
As
Thursday is considered to be an auspicious day to pray at the temple, devotees
started to gather from Wednesday night itself for an early darshan on Thursday.
This put
additional stress on the administration leading to a huge waiting time for Lord
Athi Varadar darshan.
On 18th
July 2019, a crowd of 2 lacs plus jostled for darshan of Lord Athi Varadar.
Of the 108 Vaishnavite temples,
the Varadharaja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram is believed to be the most
important.
Update 4 – 18 July 2019
Basing on the massive feedback
received from different walks of people, TamilNadu Government is ramping up
efforts for a stress-free Lord Athi Varadar darshan.
The rush of VIPs and VVIPs continue
to come down to Kanchipuram. This is expected to continue till closure of the darshan
period.
There will be visible changes in
the next couple of days.

Update 3 – 15 July 2019
On
the second Saturday of the Athi Varadar vaibhavam today, the crowds at the Sri
Devarajaswamy Temple in Kanchipuram, where the idol is giving darshan to
devotees, have been unmanageable.
On
the 13 day of public darshan today, the Athi Varadar idol looked resplendent
draped in green silk and was almost covered in mounds of flowers. Garlands made
of white lotuses and red roses added beauty to the charming deity.
Heeding
to the common devotees woes, the district administration has started to ramp up
the facilities at Kanchipuram.
NGOs
and volunteers have stepped in to provide water and food packets to the devotees
waiting in the queue.
More
ambulances and health camps have been pressed in, as there are reports of few
devotees fainting due to the climate.
In
a setback, the Kancheepuram district administration has decided to reduce the
admission timing by one hour at the Sri Devarajaswami temple.
Addressing
reporters on Sunday, Collector P. Ponniah said the district and temple
administration had decided to reduce the time by one hour to clean up the
premises. The temple gates at the eastern gopuram would be closed by 9 p.m.
from Monday (till now it was closed at 10 p.m.).
“We
have to clean the temple, fill up water in the tanks and clean the rest rooms
to ready the place for the next day,” he said.
Meanwhile,
the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has urged
the elderly, sick, differently abled, young mothers and pregnant women to avoid
visits during the weekends. This is due to the sudden surge of devotees during
those two days.
Update 2 – 14 July 2019
VIPs devotees to Kanchipuram are adding to the woes of the common man.
The number of devotee’s are just going up, minute by minute, day by day.
Over 2 lacs devotees were trying to have glimpse of Lord Athi Varadar on 13th July 2019.
The main contributors to the long waiting time was the weekend holiday shortened darshan time the previous day for the visit of President Ram Nath Kovind and entourage-which included his family, Governor Banwarilal Purohit and state minister R B Udayakumar.

Today is the 12th day of Lord Athi Varadar stay on land. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, President of India had
darshan of Lord Athi Varadar.

The unprecedented visitors
inundating Kanchipuram for Lord Athi varadar
Darshan has prompted the District
Administration to extend the darshan timings.
The original darshan timings were
5am to 5pm. The revised darshan timings are 4.30am to 10.00pm.
The darshan timings to be
effective form 10 July 2019, were announced by Shri Ponniah, Kanchipuram
collector.
There was
a very heavy rush on 9th July 2019, with estimates of over 1.20 lacs
devotees having darshan of Lord Athi varadar.
In the coming days with the number of devotees, more devotees
are expected for darshan of Lord Athi varadar .
Hence, considering the rush of
devotees to have a darshan of Athi Varadar, who was taken out of the holy tank
after 40 years at Sri Devarajaswamy Temple, Kanchipuram collector Ponniah has
said the timing for darshan has been extended by two hours.
On 9th July 2019,
visitors had to queue up for even six hours to have a darshan of the Lord Athivaradar
in sayana kolam. According to sources, about 1.20 lakh people had darshan on
the 9th day i.e 9th July 2019.
Considering the heavy rush of
devotees and pilgrims, the darshan timings have been extended on their request,
said Ponniah.
Tip 01 – As this
is once in a 40 year opportunity, numerous VIPs from across the country will
also be eager to have darshan of Lord Athi varadar. Depending on the security review, darshan for
commoners may be stopped for some time or parallel darshan may continue
Tip 02 – Be prepared for sudden
stoppage of queue for VIP visits for darshan of Lord Athi varadar
Tip 03 – Carry loose clothing. You will
be comfortable in loose clothing amongst the huge crowds.
Carry socks as you will be comfortable walking around instead
of walking barefoot. Devotees are not allowed to wear slippers while walking
towards Lord Athi varadar’s sanctum sanctorum. Majority of us are not used to
walk bare-footed and the socks will lessen the pain of walking bare-footed.
Carry water bottles, as one will feel thirsty while walking
around. Water bottles will lessen the need to search for water spots
Tip 04 – Be prepared for lots of
jostling by fellow devotees. Your fellow devotees too have come from long
distances for Lord Athi varadar darshan.
Tip 05 – Create a Whatsapp group of
your group members and immediate family members. This will be of great help in
updating the status to all your near and dear ones. Through location sharing and live tracking
features, your near and dear ones in your home town, will be assured of your
safety.
Tip 06 – Carry
a basic first aid kit to take care of yourself in case of very minor injuries.
Tip 07 – And not last but not least, Go
with a Positive mind set
Responsibility 01) Do not throw litter on the pathways, dispose the
litter in the dustbins only. The number of dustbins will be increased in the
coming days.
Responsibility 02) If
possible, limit your visit to Kanchipuram only once during these 48 days
window. This will minimise visitors to Lord and assist other visitors for a
quick darshan.
Responsibility 03) Once
darshan is over, do spend some time visiting the famed Kancheepuram saree shops
and purchase a saree or two. This will
boost ‘Make in India’, products.
Responsibility 04) Buy some
trinkets in the local market, bargain a little, not much. This will boost the
morale of the local shopkeepers and motivate them to serve with a smile.
Responsibility 05) Do not,
Do not jostle your fellow devotees.
Responsibility 06) The
Grand Finale – Do not forget to share your photos and tips on social media.
This will encourage your fellow human beings to have a hassle-free Lord
darshan.
Responsibility 07) Do
not tell bad about Kanchipuram to the outside world. Just tell only the Good,
and encourage your friends to have darshan of Lord in the 48 days cycle.
As this event has no precedent in
the recent past, the local administration has no past records to refer too.
Depending on the ground situation,
quick corrective steps will be taken.
