BBPS welcomes FASTag into its fold

FASTag is a prepaid wallet embedded into an RFID Tag for making toll payments at Highways across India.

The RFID Tag is affixed to the windscreen of the respective vehicle and sensors detect, deduct the toll amount. Hence, it is the mandatory for the holder to have sufficient balance in his/her FASTag wallet while approaching the Toll Gate.

Insufficient balance in the FASTag creates complications for the driver and the toll gate staff. It is cumbersome to immediately switch to alternate payment modes and also increases the waiting time at the toll gates.

Hence, there are multiple top-up modes for the FASTag wallet.

Some banks link the FASTag wallet to the holder’s bank account and there is no separate FASTag prepaid wallet account. However, the bottom line is that there should be sufficient balance in the underlying bank account to deduct the toll amount.

Way back in September 2018, NPCI issued guidelines for FASTag recharge via UPI.

The keywords for FASTag recharge via UPI are netc.vehiclenumber@bankupihandle. The remitter has to correctly input the 01) Vehicle Number 02) FASTag issuer bank upi handle. Wrong keying will result in a credit to the wrong FASTag account or transaction failure.

The success rate is unknown as the top-up volumes via UPI are not in the public domain.

The following FASTag issuers have enabled FASTag wallet via BBPS:

Going ahead, the remaining FASTag issuers will join this platform.

The main advantage of BBPS Channel is that the respective FASTag wallet can be topped up by 3rd parties too. The ‘Vehicle Registration Number’ is the only unique identifier required to fetch the respective FASTag wallet number and top it up.

This is very useful when there is insufficient balance in the traveler’s FASTag wallet and he/she faces challenges in top-up while driving on the highways.

So, go ahead and top-up your FASTag wallet via BBPS for instant recharge and uninterrupted driving
