Chennai Traffic Police and FASTag

The traffic has started to crisscross Indian Highways and the usage of FASTag is almost back to Pre-Covid levels.

More and More highway travellers are getting familiar with the advantages of FASTag.

In a step to expand the usage of FASTag, Chennai Traffic Police is planning to collect Traffic Fines via the FASTag.

 The reasoning is as under:

·         90% of Chennai’s four-wheelers already have FASTag. This would allow the fine to be deducted from the accounts of violators once the cameras capture violations.

·         The Corporation has reportedly installed 500 cameras at important junctions on routes used by buses. More cameras will be installed along the roads.

The detailed guidelines will offer more clarity on the following: -

01) What if there is no adequate balance in the FASTag wallet for the respective traffic fine?

02) Will there be any cashback / discount offers for instant payment of traffic fine via FASTag?

03) Can the traffic fine be paid via FASTag at static specified locations?

04) What would be the timeframe within which the traffic fines will be collected from the vehicle’s FASTag prepaid account. EG: The traffic camera records a traffic violation at 22:11 on 08 Nov. 20. By when will the amount be deduced from the FASTag prepaid account. This is important to ensure double payment does not happen by the traffic rules violator.

05) What is the redressal mechanism for incorrect deductions?

06) What will be the refund mode for incorrect deductions?

07) What will be the timeframe to response to any queries?

About FASTag:

To reduce vehicular traffic at the toll plazas, the Government of India (GOI) has mandated all toll plazas, pan India, to make toll payments electronic. With this mandate, all vehicles travelling through toll plazas will have to mandatorily pay toll charges using FASTag.

FASTag is a RFID enabled Tag stuck on a 4 wheeler's windscreen and is linked to a prepaid account. Through the FASTag readers at the toll gates, the requisite toll amount is auto deducted.

FASTag is the collection channel under NETC (National Electronic Toll Collection) program.

The NETC programme has been launched by NPCI, NHAI and IHMCL to automate electronic toll collection to ease out traffic woes and create an efficient and interoperable system on a national scale covering all toll plazas.

NPCI is working on the appropriate programs to expand the scope of FASTag outside toll plazas.
