Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Shri K Palaniswami said the data cards will be issued to about 9.69 lakh students studying in the government and government-assisted colleges by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd. (Elcot), a state government undertaking.

This is to enable students to attend online classes. The state government has taken this decision as colleges have remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and were conducting online classes, a PTI report quoted the chief minister as saying in a statement.

Students enrolled in government and government-aided arts and science colleges, polytechnic colleges, engineering colleges as well as scholarship funded private colleges are eligible for the scheme. Colleges in Tamil Nadu had reopened from December 2, 2020 for final year post-graduate students. Medical Colleges for both undergraduate and postgraduate students also reopened on December 7. As per the notice, the college for final year undergraduate degree courses would begin from February 1, 2021.

Even though colleges have reopened, the attendance remains voluntary. Online and hybrid classes are continuing in the state. The move would ensure that students have access to online content and classes as well

The exact operational details will be announced in due course. Once the operational details are out in the public domain, the students can apply for the ELCOT Data cards.

The students may make use of this data to experience the Joy of Safe ePayments.

Joy 01) - Initiate UPI transactions for their daily routine activities viz Tea, Coffee, etc.

Joy 02) – Explore funds transfer options amongst friends and family circle

Joy 03) – Explore split bills amongst friends via banking UPI Apps

Joy 04) – Pay utility bills via the BBPS (Bharat Bill Payment Systems) module in all leading UPI Apps. The bill payment option is a very good move to introduce Digital bill payments to the students.
