KSEB – 90% Bill Collections via Digital Channels

Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is fast moving towards its goal of maximising its bills collections through digital channels.

Electricity bills in India still move on the Post-Paid mode, rather than pre-Paid mode.

These mean electricity bills are generated at predefined intervals. Consumers have a window of 10-15 days to clear the bills generated against their electricity bill account, to avoid disconnection or late penalty charges.

LT Consumers have a choice to pay their bills via the Offline Mode or the Online Mode.

In the offline mode, cash is the preferred choice.

Cash can be deposited at the Utility Companies counters or accredited collection counters including banks / common service centres / state specific common service centres.

At the same counters, consumers have a choice to pay through digital modes i.e UPI / Credit Cards / Debit Cards.

One of the reasons for consumers preferring to pay cash at utility companies counters is the comfort of instant payment receipt.

The payment receipt is proof that the respective utility company has received payment to the consumer’s account. This proof is a safety key to avoid disconnection of their utility services i.e water / electricity / landline etc.

Over the years, multiple steps have been taken to move the utility bills collection from physical to digital mode.

In this regard, majority of Indian utility companies are in the forefront of motivating their consumers to pay their bills through the digital mode.

KSEB via the ‘My Consumer Number is my KSEB Account Number’, scheme is aiming to simplify the bill payment process.

In case of few utility companies, the consumer’s unique number and Account Number are different. This adds few loops to the bill payment process.

An arrangement to consider the KSEB consumer number as a virtual account number and to facilitate bill payment at banks is being readied.

The aim is to implement a complete a complete e-payment facility by the end of this financial year
